Brazil’s
geographic diversity extends to Iguassu Falls
in the south, and to the western wetlands of
the Pantanal, where capybaras, pacas, caimans,
tapir,
jaguar and monkeys abound, and where birds
in breeding season crowd the trees with
a cacophony of sound. But
to many, the jewels of Brazil are her cities,
from instantly familiar beaches and “sugar
loaf” peaks and pulsating samba rhythms
of Rio de Janeiro, to the carnavalesque Salvador,
Brazil’s heart and soul and a repository
of colonial churches, rainbow hued homes
and markets, and African folklore. In
the gem-filled mountains west of Rio the “museum
city” of Ouro Preto is a UNESCO World
Heritage Site offering a living record of
Colonial Brazil during its fabulous 100 year
gold rush, while Recife and Olinda are the
capitals of the Northeast, combining atmospheric
old quarters, splendid beaches and a rich
blend of Portuguese and African traditions.
