In
the fertile Central Valley, Santiago, the capital,
enjoys a sunny, Mediterranean-style climate
and beautiful setting, surrounded by snow-capped
Andean peaks. This
is the traveler’s base for sampling Chile’s
finest restaurants, and exploring elegant seaside
resorts:
the vibrant Spanish settled seaport of Valparaiso,
and the historic wine estates tracing their
roots to the conquistadors. South
of the Central Valley, the German-styled
town of Puerto Montt is the gateway to sparkling
Chilean lake country and cruise expeditions
to Chiloe Island and the many inlets, islands
and archipelagos of the south coast glacier
country, including the ancient multi-hued
icebergs of San Rafael Glacier and Lagoon. Southward the country grows wetter, colder and even more rugged
en route to Torres del Paine National Park,
where gothic granite pinnacle slant up into
the sky over Patagonian and dense lenga forests;
until finally the glaciers move in and become
the land itself at Tierra del Fuego in Argentina,
where travelers can follow the routes of
the great explores along the southern tip
of the continent.
