Amazon River Cruise (5 days)

The flora and fauna of the rainforest are highlighted with remote villages, sandy beaches, and rubber boom history.

Descend amid endless vistas of forest canopy into Manaus, gateway to the Amazon.  You are met on arrival and transferred to your luxury jungle resort.
TROPICAL HOTEL

DAY 2, Amazon cruise, Pagodao River, sunset canoeing.
Depart your hotel's pier at 2:30 p.m. and get acquainted with your crew while setting sail to the Pagodao River, a tributary of the Rio Negro.  Navigate through the forest-lined waters, before a sunset canoe trip to observe nocturnal animals and the changing moods of the forest as daylight fades to darkness.  Return aboard ship for dinner while sailing on to Assu creek or nearby tributaries.

DAY 3, Amazon cruise, jungle villages, spotlight expedition
The wonders of Amazonia come to life on this morning's forest trek, accompanied by a guide with a keen eye for spotting unusual plant life, and remarkable insights to the native flora and its uses.  Visit a caboclo family at one of the stilted huts along the river for a glimpse of the forest way of life, including the preparation of manioc flour, the staple food of the Amazon.
After lunch navigate the Anavilhanas Archipelago, the world's largest freshwater achipelago, and visit the town of Novo Airao to observe the hand-crafted boat yards, market and other local trades.  After dinner, set out on a spotlight expedition to search for alligator, frogs, sloth and other species, depending on the season.

DAY 4, Amazon cruise, Praia Grande beach, old rubber boom town
Navigate in season to Praia Grande or another white-sand beach for swimming in the river.  Continue to Lake Acajatuba by canoe to view rubber trees, Brazil nut and palm trees, and other typical flora.  If you wish, drop a line and fish for piranha.  After lunch, dock at the old rubber-boom Paricatuba community, whose buildings are now embraced by the forest's strangler figs.

DAY 6, Amazon cruise, Lake Janauary, sunrise canoe trip
Enjoy a sunrise canoe ride on Lake Janauary for birding, before returning past the Meeting of the Waters to Manaus and transferring to the airport for your onward flight.
