Rich Indian folklore, Inca legends, and luminous antiplano scenery
explored on land and by boat around the world’s largest
navigable body of water.
DAY 1: CUZCO/PUNO, LAKE TITICACA
Depart to the high antiplano, as you fly to Juliaca at the crossroads
of the southern Peruvian Andes, then continue overland to red-roofed
Puno on Lake Titicaca’s shore. Here at 12,500 feet, a traditional
way of life prevails, and everyday activities are given artistic expression
in the folk markets, music-making, lavish fiestas, and hundreds of
dances performed by the highlanders. Settle into your hotel on an island
once occupied by the ancient Tiahuanaco, a comfortable base for exploring
the region. ESTEVEZ HOTEL
DAY 2: PUNO, LAKE TITICACA
Today’s extraordinary motorboat tour will explore ancient cultures
and artificial islands of Lake Titicaca, virtually an island sea nestled
in the Andes at 12,530 feet. Depart from Puno wharf on a three-hour
sailing to Taquile Island, where you will be among the very few visitors
to spend time with the handsome Inca descendants who live here. You
will be welcomed into residents’ homes to share their food, learn
of their farming techniques in this difficult terrain, and have a chance
to shop for colorful weavings and handicrafts. Also visit the folkloric
museums and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, before parting ways
and sailing on to the floating islands of the Uros, one of the world’s
oldest cultures, who live on islands constructed of reeds. Step ashore
on the soft, spongy turf; see the boats and buildings fashioned from
reeds; mingle with villagers and shop for their colorful embroideries.
Return to Puno in the late afternoon. ESTEVEZ HOTEL (B,L)
DAY 3: PUNO/LIMA
After breakfast, depart to Juliaca and fly to Lima, where you are transferred
to your hotel. ROYAL PARK (B)
